Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy protection after its main shareholder, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad, said it would make no more financing available following years of unsuccessful turnaround attempts. Air Berlin carries 80,000 people a day and employs over 7,000 people. Etihad Airways owns 29.2 % of Air Berlin. Etihad Airways injected as much as 250,000,000 euros in Air Berlin as recent as April.
